According to Emergency Medical Services (EMS), STARS air ambulance airlifted one adult female to the Foothills Medical Center late on Thursday evening after Airdrie RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision just North of the Balzac overpass. It has since been confirmed that the 30-year-old Airdrie woman died in the hospital

Another adult, a 41-year-old male, was also transported via ambulance to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

According to Airdrie RCMP, at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Thursday, a member of the Alberta RCMP Traffic (Airdrie section) was travelling northbound on the QEII, approximately 3 kilometres south of Airdrie when he was passed by a northbound motorcycle at a high rate of speed.

"The officer activated his emergency equipment and the motorcycle sped up. Within seconds, the motorcycle ran into the back of another vehicle and then drove into the center median, where it burst into flames," a police press release stated.

The woman was the passenger, while the male was the driver.

The investigation continues. No further information will be released at this time.
