The City of Airdrie is changing the way it deals with lost and found items at its facilities and city transit.

Up until now, the city was in a position where it would have to auction off the items, however, the cost to do so would likely outweigh the benefit or profit of doing so.

Hundreds of items get turned in every year and go unclaimed, everything from missing socked to forgotten electronics.

Under the new policy, the city will hold on to the property for 30 days unless it is deemed “unsafe, unsanitary or perishable”. Once the 30 day period is up, depending on the item, it may be recycled, donated or disposed of.

“As far as cellphones and electronics go, we have an agreement with our service provider that would deal with the disposing or recycling of those safely,” explained Kari Kitiuk. “If you had a pair of pants, that would maybe go to the Salvation Army, but if they had holes in them then they would be disposed of.”

The new policy will apply to all items turned in at City facilities and through Airdrie Transit.
