The 51st season in the Western Hockey League got underway last Friday and some Rocky View athletes are joining the party.

Cochrane's Tyler Wong is looking to improve on last season's historic run with the Lethbridge Hurricanes where the team strolled to their first division title in 19 years.

Wong and the Hurricanes split their opening game series against the Medicine Hat Tigers with a 4-2 win on September 23rd and a 9-3 loss the following day.

Speaking of the Tigers, Airdrie's Gary Haden is looking to make his mark on the team in his first year of Major Junior play. The former Foothills Bison has played in one game so far with Medicine Hat clocking 5 penalty minutes.

One of Haden's teammates from the Foothills Bisons, Barrett Sheen is writing a new chapter in his WHL career. The Airdrie forward was traded from Lethbridge to the Kootenay Ice in the off-season after playing 46 games with the Hurricanes last year scoring 12 points and 44 penalty minutes.

It won't be long until these once Rocky View allies face each other in the WHL with Wong and the Hurricanes playing Sheen and the Kootenay Ice on September 30th in Cranbrook.

Haden and the Tigers welcome the Saskatoon Blades to their home arena, also on Friday night.

Airdrie's Taden Rattie is also writing a new story in his career as the veteran forward will be suiting up for the Vancouver Giants.
