It has been confirmed that the man accused of killing an Airdrie woman is in fact, the woman's son.
20-year-old Alexander James Thorpe of Airdrie has been charged with the second-degree murder of Melanie Lowen (48).
An autopsy was performed on Jan. 14, 2022, and the manner of death has been deemed a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
After a judicial hearing, Thorpe was remanded to custody and will next be appearing in Calgary Provincial Court on Jan.17, 2022.
Last week, early in the morning Airdrie RCMP responded to a 911 call of a male in medical distress at a business in northeast Airdrie.
Emergency Medical Services attended the scene and assessed the male. As a result of the investigation, a well-being check was done at a residence in Airdrie.
An adult female was located deceased in the residence and her death is believed to be suspicious.
In a May 2019 social media post, Lowen, congratulated Alex Thorpe, who had been featured in a Discover Airdrie article. She wrote, "Congrats Alex Thorpe!! !We are amazed by this incredible achievement. Keep up the great work !!!"
