Another parent in Luxstone is speaking out about the need for more crosswalks connecting Airdrie’s pathway system.

Charmaine Bradley and her family live on the north end of Luxstone right beside the pathway that connects through to Nose Creek Park.

Where the path meets the sidewalk there are ramps connecting it to the path on the opposite side of the street, but no crosswalk to notify drivers.

While Bradley has thought about speaking out about the need for a crosswalk before, but a recent incident involving her young son has prompted her to come forward.

The incident, which occurred on Canada Day, was captured on her surveillance video.

“If he was another six or eight feet into the intersection he would have been hit. It was a terrifying experience” said Bradley.

As you can see in the video posted below, the boy stopped and checked for traffic, makes eye contact with an oncoming driver who stops to let the boy cross. However, a second vehicle pulls out from behind and zooms around the stopped truck, seemingly oblivious to the young boy crossing the street.

“People are flying and they don’t stop. We’ve been here 12 years and I’m scared that we’re going to see something super tragic happen,”

Bradley says it’s not the first near-miss she’s seen and often sees people speeding through the neighbourhood which has a 30 km/h speed limit.

Bradley, along with 300 others, has signed a petition started by Tanya Masters after her son was struck by a car and suffered a broken leg at a similar pathway crossing on the south end of the community. She’s encouraging others to sign the petition as well and hopes the City of Airdrie will take action to make the area safer.
