A 37-year-old Calgary resident who was shot by an RCMP officer on Sunday, February 12 will be appearing in Airdrie court in late April after several charges were laid against her after an altercation between her and police. 

"As a result of an investigation by the Southern Alberta District General Investigation Section into the incidents leading up to the officer-involved shooting, charges have been pursued," an RCMP press release stated. 

Kerry Jolene Funk has been charged with Assaulting Peace Officer with a weapon, Flight from Peace Officer, Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle, Possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats. RCMP confirmed the weapon was a knife.

The incident occurred earlier this month when Airdrie Rural RCMP received a call from Calgary Police Service to assist in locating a vehicle which had been driving erratically

"An RCMP officer located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled and the pursuit was terminated. A Calgary Police Service helicopter maintained visual contact with the suspect vehicle and advised that it was travelling at high speed, sometimes in the oncoming lanes," a previous police press release stated.

According to police, the RCMP managed to stop the car near the intersection of Highway 564 and Range Road 245, in Wheatland County and tried to arrest the 37-year-old Calgary woman.

"An altercation occurred which resulted in the officer discharging their firearm. The driver [who was the lone occupant in the car] was transported via STARS to a Calgary hospital with gunshot injuries."

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken carriage over the investigation on February 13, but have yet to release an update.

Funk has been released on conditions and will be appearing in Airdrie Provincial Court on April 20, 2023.

No officers were physically injured during this incident.
