Environment Canada warns up to 20 cm of snow in Rockies; Airdrie to see rain changing to light snow Saturday
Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings for parts of Banff National Park ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend, while Airdrie is forecast to see rain turn to light snow by Saturday night. No snowfall warnings are in effect for Airdrie. The 4 p.m. MDT Friday forecast calls for increasing cloudiness on Saturday, with rain starting near noon, changing to periods of snow in the evening, and ending overnight. Local snowfall amounts near two centimetres are expected, with winds shifting to north 30 km/h gusting to 50 near noon. A high of 11 C and an overnight low of –3 C are forecast, with a wind chill of –7 overnight. A 60 per cent chance of flurries continues Sunday with a high near –1 C. Sunny but cold weather is expected for Thanksgiving Monday, with a high of +2 C and a low near –11 C overnight. Environment Canada said in a 3:38 p.m. MDT Friday advisory that five to 20 centimetres of snow is expected in parts of the Rockies, depending on location. Rain is expected to change to snow between midday Saturday and Saturday evening and continue through Saturday night, with light snow expected Sunday. The highest snowfall amounts are expected along the Icefields Parkway, where up to 20 centimetres may fall. Near 10 centimetres is possible along portions of the Trans-Canada Highway, and about five centimetres over Banff and Canmore. The agency warned that rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult and visibility poor at times. The snowfall warnings issued at 3:38 p.m. are in effect for: Banff National Park near Banff Banff National Park near Lake Louise Banff National Park near Saskatchewan River Crossing A separate special weather statement, issued at 3:48 p.m. MDT Friday, covers parts of the foothills and mountain parks, including Clearwater County near Ya-Ha-Tinda Ranch. It says snowfall accumulations will vary by elevation, with some areas expected to receive 5 to 10 centimetres of heavy, wet snow through Saturday night. Light snow is also expected Sunday and may continue into Thanksgiving. Public Safety Canada is reminding travellers to prepare for quickly changing road conditions and to keep an emergency kit with water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
