Early-morning fire damages mobile home in Olds’ Silver Lynx neighbourhood
A fire caused extensive damage to a mobile home early Tuesday morning in the Silver Lynx community of Olds. The Olds Fire Department said crews were dispatched at 5:48 a.m. to #11 5210 65 Avenue after reports of a structure fire. Fire Chief Justin Andrew said firefighters arrived to find “heavy smoke and fire from the structure,” adding that the lone occupant had escaped safely. The department said the fire spread rapidly, causing “complete destruction to the rear of the residence” and extensive damage through the attic. A neighbouring property also sustained exterior heat damage before firefighters stopped the flames from spreading. “The lone occupant was awakened by a functioning smoke alarm and was able to exit the structure uninjured,” Andrew said. “This is a powerful reminder of how working smoke alarms save lives. It’s especially timely, as just last week during Fire Prevention Week, our members were out in the community raising awareness about this very message.” Eighteen firefighters responded, including crews from Olds and an additional engine from Didsbury Fire under mutual aid. The Olds Fire Department deployed two engines, two command units and a support truck. One firefighter sustained a minor injury that did not require hospital transport. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Olds Fire investigators but is not considered suspicious. Damage is considered extensive.
