Airdrie pauses Genesis Place increases; transit rates, service changes start Sept. 2
Fee increases at Genesis Place that were approved by city council in April have been put on hold until pool maintenance is finished, according to the City of Airdrie website. Admission and pass adjustments were scheduled to take effect Sept. 1 under the User Fees and Charges Bylaw, but the city said the hikes will remain paused until the work is complete. Council approved the increases on April 15, applying a 1.7 per cent Consumer Price Index factor based on the Calgary and Region Economic Outlook report. Under the User Fees and Charges Policy, rates are set to align with market averages in the first year of a council term, then adjusted annually by CPI in years two through four. When the adjustments take effect, the following rates will apply: Infants and preschoolers (0–5 years): remain free for drop-in, punch card, and monthly passes. Children (6–12 years): drop-in rises to $8.75 from $8.50; 10-visit punch card to $78.75 from $76.50; monthly pass to $31.27 from $30.75. Youth (13–17 years): drop-in to $10.75 from $10.50; punch card to $96.75 from $94.50; monthly pass to $41.96 from $41.25. Students (18–25 years with ID): drop-in to $15.25 from $15.00; punch card to $137.25 from $135.00; monthly pass to $68.89 from $67.75. Adults: drop-in to $18.00 from $17.75; punch card to $162.00 from $159.75; monthly pass to $78.81 from $77.50. Seniors (65+): drop-in to $10.75 from $10.50; punch card to $96.75 from $94.50; monthly pass to $52.12 from $51.25. Seniors (80+, Airdrie & Rocky View County residents): remain free for all admission types. Veterans (CFOne card required): drop-in to $10.75 from $10.50; punch card to $96.75 from $94.50; monthly pass to $52.12 from $51.25. Family (one adult): drop-in to $31.75 from $31.25; punch card to $285.75 from $281.25; monthly pass to $110.10 from $109.25. Family (two adults): drop-in to $33.75 from $33.25; punch card to $303.75 from $299.25; monthly pass to $147.73 from $145.25. Family passes include all immediate children under 18 living in the same household. Students between 18 and 25 can be added to the family pass with valid student ID. Corporate continuous monthly passes remain available through approved participating organizations with proof of employment. A facility administrative fee of $20.25 applies when a pass is activated or reactivated. The city said the Airdrie Fair Access program continues to offer up to 75 per cent discounts on recreation centre admissions, passes and programs for eligible low-income residents. Genesis Place passes are also available for two-week loan through the Airdrie Public Library. Maintenance closures The city said Genesis Place is undergoing biennial pool maintenance this summer, which began Aug. 22 and has been extended after unexpected basin complications. Work includes investigative assessments, tiling and refinishing of the dive tank and lane pool, tile and grout repairs in the leisure pool, replacement of acoustic panels and upgrades to aquatics lighting. The pool and aquatics area will not reopen on Sept. 13 as originally scheduled. The closure is expected to last at least two additional weeks, with an updated reopening date to be shared after investigative work is complete. Registration for September and October swimming lessons remains paused until timelines are confirmed. All other program registrations opened Aug. 10. To help offset the extended pool closure, the city added new family activities to the fall schedule, including: Backyard Play – Inside at Genesis Place on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 3. Backyard Play – Sport Edition on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 7. Family Track Attack on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., beginning Sept. 7. Continuous passholders have the option to temporarily pause their passes for the duration of the closure. The city said pausing a pass also pauses access to all facility amenities, and passes will automatically restart once the pool reopens. Transit Airdrie Transit riders will see schedule changes and higher fares starting Sept. 2, according to the city’s website. Routes 1 and 3 will run every 30 minutes instead of hourly, with evening and Saturday service added. Regional Route 900 will begin service at 6:15 a.m., offering earlier trips to CrossIron Mills and Calgary. The city noted that Google Trip Planner remains available for riders to map out their journeys, while the Transit app now provides step-by-step trip planning and real-time bus tracking.
