Premier Smith, Alberta Next panel to hold Airdrie town hall
Premier Danielle Smith will join members of the Alberta Next Panel for a town hall in Airdrie on Monday evening. The province said in a Sept. 12 media advisory that the in-person event is scheduled for Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. The advisory did not list a location. The Alberta Next website lists proposals such as creating a provincial pension plan to replace the Canada Pension Plan, ending Alberta’s contract with the RCMP and establishing an Alberta Provincial Police Service, and withdrawing from the joint tax collection agreement with the Canada Revenue Agency. The site also says Alberta should work with other provinces to press for constitutional changes to expand provincial powers. It says the province should work to reform federal transfers and the equalization program, which it says see Alberta contribute $23 billion more annually than it receives in services and transfers from Ottawa. Another proposal is to take more control of immigration. On its FAQ page, the site says feedback from the tour will help shape questions for a 2026 referendum “to assert our sovereignty and constitutional rights within a united Canada.” It also states: “Alberta Next is about exploring the ideas and policies to assert our sovereignty … within a united Canada,” rejecting the notion it is about separation. The FAQ states: “All Albertans are welcome, so long as they are behaving respectfully.” According to the site, upcoming stops include Grande Prairie on Sept. 17 and Calgary on Sept. 29. The Alberta NDP said it held a #BetterTogether town hall in Airdrie on Thursday. The party said leader Naheed Nenshi attended alongside opposition MLAs and community speakers. The advisory said Monday’s meeting will also be livestreamed on the premier’s Facebook and X accounts. Sign up to get the latest local news headlines delivered directly to your inbox every afternoon.
