A local baseball team has swung their way to the Canadian Senior Little League Championships.

The Airdrie A’s Senior AAA club won in extra innings on Saturday (July 6th) to clinch the Alberta title and a spot in the national tournament.

Al Golemme, one of the coaches for the team says the team is very excited to be moving on.

“The boys are extremely excited to move forward. This group tends to be quite successful but also come to the end of tournaments and games, they’ve never got to this level until this year. They are very, very, very excited to move on and to experience the Canadian Championships program.”

The winning moment didn’t come easily for the team as they were down 11-3 before mounting their massive comeback.

“It was quite a hill to climb to tie that game,” says Golemme, “we went into extra innings and then in the top of the eighth we ended up winning it by one point.”

In the end, it was a fitting celebration for a group of young men that have spent years together.

“We’ve been coaching this group for almost ten years. The majority of them have been together for that long. They’re a pretty special set of boys that’s for sure.”

The Canadian Championships begin with the opening ceremonies on Friday (July 13th) with the A’s playing their first game against Edmonton that night.
