Athletes from Airdrie helped Zone 2 finish second in the medal count at the Alberta Winter Games, held on the weekend in the Municipality of Wood Buffalo.  

Zone 2 captured 21 gold, 21 silver, and 26 bronze medals and improved upon their third-place finish at the 2016 Winter Games in Medicine Hat.

Zone 3 from Calgary finished first at the games which featured nearly 2,500 athletes between 11 and 17 years of age, competing in 22 sports. 

Besides the medals for individual and team performances, three additional awards were presented at the games closing ceremonies.

The Alberta Cup for the zone achieving the most medal points went to Zone 3.  The Minister's Cup went to the zone showing the greatest improvement from one Alberta games to the next was won by Zone 7 from North Eastern Alberta.  The Spirit of Sport Award went to the zone that best demonstrated the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, team spirit and cooperation on the field of play.  The award was won by Zone 6 from Edmonton. 

The eyes of Alberta sport will now turn to the City of Airdrie who are hosting the Alberta Winter Games the next time they're held in 2020.
