The season got underway on foreign soil, or ice, as the case may be, for one local NHLer while for another it got his home ice season underway pretty much in his own backyard yesterday (October 6).

Airdrie's Ty Rattie and the Edmonton Oilers were in Gothenburg, Sweden to face the New Jersey Devils to drop the puck on the 2018-2019 NHL Global Series.  The game didn't turn out quite as the Oilers hoped as they dropped a 5 - 2 decision.

Rattie was held off the scoresheet but he did log 19:13 in ice time to begin the season with the Oil.

For Dillon Dube, it was his first chance to suit up in front of friends and family from his hometown of Cochrane in the regular season of his first NHL campaign.

Dube couldn't pick up a point either, but his Flames teammates evened the score with the Canucks by beating them 7 - 4.  Vancouver won on opening night by a 5 - 2 count.

Dube had his share of ice time as well, with just under 13 minutes.

The Oilers return from Sweden to play their next game on Thursday in Boston.  The Flames are back in action Tuesday night when they take on the Predators in Nashville.
