Airdrie's election season officially begins today (September 18) as candidates will make their way to City Hall and file their paperwork on Nomination Day.

Returning Officer Sharon Pollyck explained what Nomination Day entails.

"If a person would like to run in the election as a candidate, they have to file their nomination papers between ten and noon, and that's here in Council Chambers at City Hall."

Pollyck said in that two hour window, any potential candidate needs to drop off a paper saying they wish to run, as well as ten signatures from Airdrie voters, a $100 dollar deposit and a Candidate Acceptance, which says they acknowledge that if they are elected they will accept the position they have been elected to.

The ballots won't immediately be official, as candidates still have some time to withdraw after dropping off their paperwork.

"They do have 24 hours to withdraw, so the ballot actually becomes official at noon on Tuesday."

After that, the election season has begun. Pollyck explained what you will see in the coming month.

"You'll probably see more active campaigning happening than has happened to date. You'll see more signs. There is a forum. I believe it's being hosted by the Chamber on October 3 at Bert Church Theatre."

Once the ballots are official, the City will also make a list of all the mayoral and council candidates available on their website.

"We will be posting candidates names, a photo of the candidate and a link of the candidates choice to either their webpage, Facebook page, Twitter account, whatever they would prefer."

Today is also nomination day for anyone wishing to run for school trustee in Rocky View.
