Last night two nominees were presented to city council for the 2018 Elite Athlete Award. 

Your Nominees for the 2018 award is as follows. 

 Your First Nominee is Danica Macdonald Danica began swimming When she was six. Her parents signed her up for lessons not knowing it was competitive swimming which sparked her passion for the sport. After moving to Airdrie, Danica has gone on to compete at a variety of provincial and national competitions. In 2015, she helped break the 15-17 Alberta provincial record in the 4x100, that record still stands. She also  Specializes in the 100 meters and 200-meter breaststroke and she is currently a member of the University of Calgary Swim Team. 

Piper Fitzgerald is your second nominee, Piper started to dance when she was three years old when her mother signed her up at the Starbound Dancing Company. It didn't take long for dance to become pipers favorite thing. In 2016, Piper began ballet at YYC Dance Project. In her first competition, she placed first in classical variation. She just competed in her first international competition, placing in the top 12 for her contemporary solo at the Youth American Grand Prix in Las Vegas.

Past winners include Arm Wrestler Darrell Belyk and  Gymnast Corrisa Boychuck.

The nominees will be recognized at the 2018 Awards of Community Excellence. 

For someone to be nominated they must meet the following criteria,  be a resident of Airdrie for three years, have community contributions, exceptional achievement in sports, and three letters of support.
