Calgary City Council has decided to cancel the city's bid to host the 2026 Olympic Games.

Last week's non-binding plebiscite showed 56 per cent of Calgarians voted against the bid. Today (November 19), city council made it official and will not be going forward with it.

The approximate cost of running the games would have been $5.2 billion.

Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown shared his thoughts on last week's plebiscite results saying, "Half of me understands why they voted no and the other half is a little disappointed for what could have been."

Brown says had Calgary hosted the next games, it would have meant great economic growth and more jobs for Airdrie, as well as new and improved infrastructure.

The remaining two cities in the bid to host the 2026 Olympic Games are Stockholm, Sweden, and Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
