Students from École Francophone D'Airdrie set up camp this morning (December 12) in order to raise awareness for hunger and homelessness.

Students in grades seven to nine will be spending the next 24 hours outside of school raising awareness on the tough issue as part of 24 Hours Against Hunger.

"24 Hours Against Hunger is where some students from the high school part of our school will sleep in cardboard boxes or tents outside for 24 hours," said Claire, one of the students participating. "The goal [is] to raise awareness for homeless people and not having enough food."

The students will accept donations of canned goods and cash at their campsite so that those in need can purchase fresh produce.

Earlier today, several of the students marched to City Hall carrying a banner they made for the event to further raise awareness for their campaign.

24 Hours Against Hunger began seven years ago when the students saw a need in Airdrie that they wanted to help fill.

"They found out that a bunch of people, for Christmas and during the holidays, they had no food to eat at all. Children, adults, everybody pretty much didn't have food. They wanted to do something about that so that's how it all started."

The campout wraps up for the students at 9:00am tomorrow (December 13).
