The long anticipated completion of 40th Avenue should come later this year.

Construction of the road, which will connect 8th Street to Main Street, has been divided into three phases: Earth works, building a bridge over the train tracks, and the final road works. Bob Neale, Engineering Services Team Leader with the City of Airdrie says that phase one is done, and the City is waiting for the weather to improve before continuing with phase two.

"The second stage was to build the bridge across the CPR tracks, and that is currently scheduled to be complete by the end of April."

Neale said once the bridge is complete, the road will be constructed, likely some time in May. However, construction of that road is not entirely in the City's hands.

"There's a significant developer obligation that will actually finish the connection from where we leave off on the ramp going up the bridge to Main Street itself."

Neale said the City is coordinating with the developer so that the road can be open by the fall.

The Engineering team are also in the early stages of designing an interchange that will cross over the QE2, creating another way to get from one side of Airdrie to the other. The City will partner with Alberta Transportation on that project

"That project timeline is about a year long, so by early 2018 we should have some kind of a design in place which will connect the dots from 40th Avenue to get it across the highway over to the King's Heights area."

Neale said there will be an open house on the new project on March 22 in the Rotary Room at Genesis Place
