As millions of dollars continue to be raised for the Humboldt Broncos, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is making sure you know which fundraisers are real.

Media and Communications Specialist with the BBB, Leah Brownridge, said thankfully there’s been no false sites popping up that’s taking money away from the Broncos.

The Better Business Bureau said you should always be aware of where you're sending your donations to.

“Fortunately we have not heard of any such case yet. It doesn’t mean it’s not happening so if anyone has experienced a fake charity or fake donation site that’s claiming to help the Humboldt Broncos family and friends and those affected, we do certainly encourage people to report it to us.”

Brownridge said that if you’re donating to a specific organization, you need to make sure they’re registered with the Canada Revenue Agency.

Many websites have also come out collecting donations and Brownridge recommends that you do your research before sending your money there.

“If it is an online donation website, it doesn’t mean it’s automatically a scam, there are perfectly legitimate donation websites out there. It just means there’s more risk and more opportunity for someone to set up a fake donation website.”

Some red flags you need to be aware of on fundraising sites is poor grammar with the text and the absence of the HTTPS in the browser search bar.

Brownridge finishes by pointing out one tip that some forget to look at.

“Really watch for claims that 100% of the donation will go to those in need. Keep in mind that lots of different donation websites, they have operating costs, there may be processing fees that are attached to credit card donations, things of that nature.”

The biggest fundraiser for the Broncos through Go Fund Me has raised close to $8 Million as of Tuesday night (April 10th).
