There are now 22 active cases of COVID-19 in Airdrie.

That's an increase of seven active cases in our city after Dr. Deena Hinshaw confirmed more than 300 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. Six new cases were also identified in Rocky View County for a total of 17 active cases.

110 new cases were identified on Friday (based on 10,617 tests), 103 on Saturday (based on 9,848 tests), and 91 on Sunday (based on 7,428 tests).

Province-wide, there are 1,430 active cases of COVID-19 while 8,774 recovered. 53 Airdronians and 44 Rocky View County residents have recovered from the virus so far.

Sadly Dr. Hinshaw announced eight more deaths on Monday, five of which occurred at the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre in Edmonton, where there have now been 12 deaths. To date, a total of 186 people in Alberta have died from COVID-19.

Hospitalization and ICU numbers have decreased since Friday, with 17 people in intensive care out of 88 people who are being treated in hospital.

Dr. Hinshaw says it's important to remember that there are real people behind the COVID numbers.

"These are real people that caught COVID-19 while simply living their lives," she says. "People who catch COVID-19 aren't bad people, and at the same time people who avoid COVID-19 exposure aren't fear mongering."

Hinshaw once again reminds Albertans that COVID is not going away and that it is within our control to get the case numbers moving in a positive direction.

"As we see in the case numbers, the curve is no longer flat in Alberta," says Dr. Hinshaw. "We all need to assess our own lives for where we are at risk of spreading or contracting the virus. All of us can make changes to our daily routines to prevent the spread of COVID."

Dr. Hinshaw announced that Albertans can access COVID-19 test results, as well as other personal health information, through a secure online portal called My Health Records.

UPDATE: According to the latest statistics from the province as of July 28, Airdrie has 25 active cases of COVID-19 while 53 people have recovered.
