The constant layer of what looks like clouds over Airdrie for the past few days is actually a constant layer of smoke and it's driven up the Air Quality Health Index for the area.

Yesterday (August 30th) afternoon, Environment Canada said the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) jumped to a six, or the moderate range.

Today won't be any better as the index could hit seven or high risk by the after.

That means that people at risk for respiratory problems should consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors if they are experiencing any symptoms.

The AQHI is forecast to drop back to a four, or moderate level, by tomorrow.
