A Facebook group that's grown to be a champion for the community made some large financial contributions to two charities this week.

The Airdrie Dads group held their third annual golf tournament on June 2nd at the Apple Creek Golf Club.  155 golfers teed off for the event which was raising funds for the Airdrie Food Bank and the Nathan O'Brien Children's Foundation.  This week, according to a member of Airdrie Dads and one of the tournament organizers Steve Grueber, those funds were presented.  "We donated half of our proceeds from the tournament to the Airdrie Food Bank and half to the Nathan O'Brien Children's Foundation and we gave those organizations $10,000 each."

Grueber says the organizations are both close to the Dad's hearts.  "They all involved kids, they involve families and the Airdrie Dads is all about giving back to our community and they were on last year's tournament as well so we just felt it was appropriate to do it for the third annual as well."

Grueber says the Airdrie Dads started three years ago and has evolved from a Facebook group into a group making a real difference in the community.  "It started out with a bunch of guys joking around and having fun looking for where's the next mechanic at or where's the best chinese food and then a bunch of guys from time to time will put their heads together and see a cause and be like 'hey, this makes sense.'  It's run by the admin of the group and it gets approved and then we put all of our weight behind it and typically it comes out as a success."

The Executive Director of the Airdrie Food Bank Lori McRitchie says they are extremely grateful for the group's generosity.  She says, especially at this time of year, the money is greatly needed.  "Their support is amazing.  It's going to allow us to get through the times when we have the least amount of food on site.  The need doesn't stop in the summer, but people's priorities move on to other things so it just means that we're going to continue to be able to care for our community with their help."

Along with the $20,000 the Airdrie Dads group donated to the two charities, they've also just made a donation of $2,500 to the Alberta Children's Hospital through their partnership with Thumbprint Beer Market in Airdrie and Village Brewery in Calgary with their co-branded beer known as "Father."  That donation was made on behalf of the little boy who died tragically on Family Day in Airdrie.
