A local educator was recently recognized for his work by the University of Calgary.

George McDougall vice-principal Jim Reilly received the U of C's Award for Workplace-Integrated Education for his work with the Werklund School of Education's student teacher program.

"You know, it's a real honour, very humbling. I was one of the only people outside of the University of Calgary to receive the award. Usually they got to professors and such at the University."

The Award for Workplace-Integrated Education is given out every year by U of C, and recognizes the teaching excellence of an educator teaching in a workplace-based setting.

Reilly has worked with the University for three years to help them refine their student teacher program and implement it at George McDougall. He said his work with U of C grew from one of Rocky View Schools' communities of practice, which are groups of teachers that explore different education topics.

"Three years ago, myself and a couple of other administrators got together and really explored this idea of student teachers, how we could improve it, how we could make it better, to be honest with you, and more consistent, which led to reaching out the to University of Calgary."
