The Airdrie Food Bank is being recognized for the excellent work they do.

The organization has been nominated for the Excellence in Food Banking Award (Mid-Sized Cities) from Food Banks Canada.

"It's basically an award that recognizes the great work that a food bank has done, and we're just honoured to have been nominated," said Executive Director Lori McRitchie.

The Food Bank was nominated by their provincial association. Part of the process was getting two letters of reference, and they approached the City of Airdrie for one of those letters. Through a chuckle, McRitchie said she was happy to have the support of the City, but was surprised that the letter became an agenda item at last week's City Council Meeting (March 6).

"We partner very well with the City and we've done a lot of work with them, so to have them back us and say they recognize the work that we do in the community is a big deal for us."

While they hope to get the award, McRitchie says everyone is happy to just be nominated.

"You know, there's no greater honour. Just to be recognized by your peers for the work that you do means just so much and to be recognized nationally... so you know, if we win this award it will just be amazing and if not, we've been nominated."

The award will be handed out in June at the National Conference for Food Banks Canada, which coincidentally are being hosted by Calgary and Airdrie.
