According to Environment Canada, Airdrie and Central Alberta may see massive thunderstorms form today (July 13th).

John-Paul Cragg, Warning Preparedness Specialist for Environment Canada says they have released a map that draws out the risk area in advance for the development of thunderstorms.

"Expect thunderstorm watches for your area and if those storms develop, be prepared for thunderstorm warnings."

Cragg says that most likely we will see watches put in place over the next few hours.

There are a few elements needed for these storms to develop, one of them is increased daytime heating so that the air above the ground increases in temperatures.

"The heat is the reason we normally see these storms develop in the afternoon."

The storms also need precipitation and a high dew point in the air.

The upper atmosphere needs to be colder as well so that when the cold air rises and cold air from above sinks these factors will lead to potential storms.

"It really looks like today is one of those days that all of the elements come today so that severe weather can occur."

Cragg says its crucial for people between Edmonton and Calgary to stay on top of the weather.

"Make sure you are staying on top of these watches if warnings are given it means everything has come together and the storm is coming."
