The Trans Mountain Pipeline continues to be the hottest topic in the Alberta Legislature and Airdrie’s MLA is hoping it will be resolved soon.

UCP MLA Angela Pitt said that she’s grateful that the NDP have come around and are in huge support of this project, after being against pipelines just three years ago.

Pitt said that she has heard many strong words from the Premier but they need to turn into actions.

“I really hope that the Premier holds strong and stands up for Alberta. This pipeline is extremely important for Alberta’s economy but it’s also extremely important for Canada’s economy. We need to get this pipeline built and we need to get it built soon.”

The NDP said that they will propose tough measures on B.C. in order to get this pipeline finished and have called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step in.

Pitt and other opposition party MLA's said they want this issue resolved as much as the governing party, but to do that, the NDP need to drop the hammer.

“It’s time to actually take some tough measures here. Jason Kenney and the UCP have been calling on the Premier to be doing this for quite some time. As far as turning off the taps, there’s a number of suggestions that we made in Question period today and the government is being very secretive as to what those measures will actually be.”

Despite the strong words from the government, Pitt isn’t rejoicing quite yet, saying she’s heard the NDP promise swift action only to back away later.

Regardless of what actions are taken, Pitt said the fiasco between B.C and Alberta over the pipeline project is hurting more people in the province.

“Unfortunately it’s just punishing Albertans, most certainly the people of Airdrie. Airdrie has a very close connection with the oil and gas industry and they certainly understand the importance of pipelines. It’s too bad we’re in a landlock here.”
