The Airdrie RCMP assisted the Calgary Police Service (CPS) to intercept a vehicle which was involved in a carjacking in Calgary and arrest the suspects who were responsible just outside of Crossfield.

Constable Dan Martin says the incident started yesterday (June 12) at approximately 2:30 pm.  Airdrie RCMP were alerted to a vehicle being followed by the CPS HAWCS helicopter north on Highway 2 into the Airdrie area.  The vehicle, a silver Dodge Caravan, had reportedly been carjacked at knifepoint inside Calgary.

"The vehicle was driving quite erratically and at quite high speeds at some points.  Attempts to stop the vehicle by activating emergency lights and sirens were unsuccessful and a short pursuit ensured through rural areas near Crossfield," says Martin.

A spike belt was eventually deployed along Township Road 285 heading into Crossfield.  Martin says that tactic worked.  "The spike belt was successful in deflating some of the tires.  The vehicle slowed and RCMP and CPS Tac Units were able to engage the vehicle, arresting the two suspects, a male and a female, inside without incident."  Police searched the van and located a large knife inside.

Martin says no one was injured during the pursuit.  The van drove down gravel roads and on pavement during the pursuit so Martin says speeds varied between 60 kmh and 170 kmh.

Martin says the 35-year-old male, who has yet to appear before a Justice of the Peace, is facing quite a list of charges.  "Robbery, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, and possession of methamphetamines."  The female suspect is also facing charges.

Martin says the Airdrie RCMP can't comment on the initial carjacking incident saying CPS is taking the lead on the file and dealing with the suspects.
