The Airdrie RCMP's Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) has seized a large quantity of suspected fentanyl, along with other drugs, real and counterfeit cash, and firearms after conducting a search warrant in a Calgary neighbourhood on the weekend.

On Saturday, March 10th, the Airdrie RCMP CRU with the assistance of the Calgary Police Service and the RCMP's Federal Serious and Organized Crime Team executed the warrant at a residence in the Forest Lawn area of Calgary.  As a result. a male and a female were arrested and charged and a significant amount of drugs and cash were removed from the home.

Airdrie RCMP Constable Dan Martin takes up the story.  "Over 1,600 suspected fentanyl pills, 3.5 ounces of suspected fentanyl powder, seven grams of suspected carfentanil powder, 25 morphine pills, and 9.5 ounces of methamphetamine were seized.  Along with that $15,000 in Canadian cash and what is believed to be $5,000 in counterfeit American cash and two firearms were seized, one of them is described as an assault-style rifle."

Martin says the investigation was led by the Airdrie RCMP's CRU and targetted suspects who were believed to be supplying fentanyl and other drugs to Airdrie and Rocky View County.

"As a result of this investigation, 31-year-old Ivo Musa of Calgary has been charged with 11 offenses along with 23-year-old Heidi Helene Moran who faces the same 11 charges.  She was also arrested on eight outstanding arrest warrants from four different police jurisdictions in Alberta.  They've both been remanded in custody and they have yet to be given an actual court date."

Those charges include possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking, possession of carfentanil for the purpose of trafficking, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, proceeds of crime over $5,000 and weapons offenses.

Martin says while it's hard to put a dollar value on the drugs seized, it is very significant.  "It would definitely be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.  This is definitely going to cut the supply of some of these drugs in the area and we all know with a decrease in drugs we can also see a decrease in crime."

Airdrie CRU Team Leader Sergeant Andrew Boxall says the searches conducted are part of a larger crime reduction strategy, focusing on identifying repeat offenders and conducting targetted, intelligence-led investigations. "This seizure of drugs, cash, and firearms plays a part in making our communities safer," says Boxall.

Martin explains, "The CRU Unit is not a unit that you typically see out and about every day but they are working behind the scenes and working hard to make our community safer."
