A member of the Airdrie RCMP is in a Calgary hospital in stable condition after being struck by a fleeing vehicle this morning (December 1) in Airdrie.

At around 2:10 am, Airdrie RCMP attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle on Yankee Valley Boulevard.  As members were positioning themselves for the traffic stop, the suspect vehicle drove away in a dangerous manner.

RCMP members pursued the vehicle until it stopped suddenly at the intersection of Cooper’s Crossing Gate and Cooper’s Drive.  The members exited their unmarked police car and began to approach the suspect vehicle when it suddenly reversed at a high rate of speed, hitting one of the officers and striking the two police vehicles. It is believed the RCMP officer was dragged by the vehicle.  One of the police vehicles that was struck was rendered inoperable.

The suspect vehicle then fled the scene, hitting an occupied civilian vehicle, also leaving it inoperable.  Members pursued the vehicle and it eventually went off the road into a ditch at Township Road 270 and Range Road 290.   The Calgary Police Service's HAWCS helicopter was on the scene after being called to assist Airdrie RCMP.

Three people who were in the vehicle were arrested after it entered the ditch.  The driver took off on foot and was located a short time later by the Airdrie Police Dog Service.  During the course of the arrest, a second officer was also injured but the severity of the injuries is unknown.

The member who was struck by the vehicle is currently at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary in stable condition.

The intersection of Cooper's Crossing Gate and Cooper's Drive was closed following the incident and wasn't re-opened until around 8:00 am while an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist examined the scene.

The investigation into the incident is continuing.

Airdrie RCMP are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact them at 403 945-7200 or 911.
