Airdronians certainly took time to remember this weekend in possibly one of the most successful ceremonies to date.

Beginning at 10am at Genesis Place, the arena was already filled by 9:30. The ceremony featured speakers from the Airdrie Legion, Airdrie RCMP, and Mayor Brown.

"2017, as we know, marks 150 years of confederation for Canada. 150 years of life in a free country with unlimited opportunities and we are so fortunately to be proudly protected by our Canadian forces for over a century. If that's not a reason to say thank you, I don't know what is." said Brown.

The ceremony helped mark the anniversary of a number of battles including Passchendaele, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70 and others. Speakers shared stories of courage and fear, describing the terrible conditions soldiers often face.

Councillor Al Jones says it's great to see the Legion involve the youth.

"The Legion has done a fantastic job in ensuring that they include the youth. And that's important because the history of Remembrance Day, in order for that to move forward, it's important that the youth be part of the process of the actual ceremony. It was very heartwarming."

Jones also added his thoughts on the importance of remembering

"It's just important that people remember that we have people serving all over the world right now, as we're speaking, and it's important to keep that in mind throughout the year and to reach out if we see that there's some needs there, to help out whenever we can."
