The news that Trans Canada has cancelled the Energy East Pipeline project isn't sitting well with Alberta's political leaders.

Premier Rachel Notley said in a statement this morning (October 5) that the province is deeply disappointing by the decision, which would have helped create jobs and help keep Canada's oil in the country.

Opposition leaders also denounced the cancellation, but some took to blaming the NDP for contributing to the decision through their recent policies.

UCP leadership candidate Brian Jean said that the cancellation is a "shameful moment in Canadian History" and blamed the NDP's carbon tax and caps on the oilsands for contributing to the decision.

Jean's opponent in the leadership race Jason Kenney agreed, saying that the NDP need to kill their increase in the carbon tax set for January 1st. Kenney stated the carbon tax has only cost more jobs for Albertans.

Those statements were echoed by Interim UCP Leader Nathan Cooper of Carstairs, who said changes implemented by the Alberta Government and the Federal Liberals did more harm to the proposed project.

Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan was also disappointing by the decision but isn't playing the political blame game, saying the Trans Canada cancellation was ultimately a business decision.
