The Alberta RCMP have provided a tool that allows residents to look on a local map showing crime reported and validated in their area.

The tool, Crime Maps, shows crimes such as theft from motor vehicles, theft of motor vehicles, break and enters, theft over and under $5000 and missing person cases within the last 14 days.

Alberta RCMP hopes that the tool will encourage locals to take crime preventative measures when going about their daily life. With the knowledge that crime is around their own neighbourhoods, locals should be more aware of criminal activity and the RCMP hope that locals will use the tool to report suspicious behaviour.

The map allows locals to get an inside look on a tiny part of the analytical work that goes into locating and reporting criminal and suspicious activities. The RCMP can use the information to create hotspots for targetted enforcement initiatives.

To protect the privacy, the exact locations of crimes are not given. Instead, Crime Maps shows the validated criminal case on a nearby road.
