Yesterday (November 12) Alberta put new restrictions in place in an attempt to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the province and the numbers today likely show why.

Alberta had its second day of over 900 cases of the virus when it recorded 907 new cases in the province today.  Hospitalizations jumped by 15 to 240 and people being treated in ICUs rose by three from yesterday to 54.

Five more deaths were reported, edging us closer to a grim total.  Alberta is just two deaths shy of 400.  Four of the five deaths were in the Edmonton Zone.  The City of Edmonton has the largest number of active cases in Alberta with 3,572.  The other death was in the Calgary Zone. Calgary is just 19 cases behind Edmonton with 3,553.

The total number of active cases in the City of Airdrie increased by 17 today to 277.  Recoveries in the city rose by 16 to 273.

The active cases in Rocky View County were up by just one today to 70 while recoveries increased by six to a total of 178.

Yesterday Premier Jason Kenney announced new restrictions starting today and lasting for two weeks.  They include restaurants, bars, and pubs having to stop liquor sales by 10:00 pm and close by 11:00 pm and a ban on indoor group fitness classes, team sports activities, and group performance activities.  The restrictions apply to  Calgary and surrounding areas, including Airdrie, Edmonton, and surrounding areas as well as Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Red Deer, and Lethbridge.

Additional public health measures will also be implemented in all regions under an enhanced status. The measures are in place until further notice:

  • Maximum attendance of 50 at wedding or funeral ceremonies.
  • A recommendation that all faith-based activities limit attendance to one-third capacity per service.
  • Residents should not hold social gatherings within their homes and should not plan social gatherings outside their community.
  • A recommendation that employers in office settings implement measures to reduce the number of employees in the workplace at one time.

All other existing guidance and legal orders remain in place in all areas.
