2017 marked Canada's 150th birthday but the celebrations are far from being over in Airdrie.

According to Melanie Taylor of the Airdrie Canada 150 Committee, there is more excitement coming up, and a way for Airdrie residents to get involved.

"One of the things we wanted to do was have a way for our community to remember the celebration of the 150 and really celebrate both being a resident of Airdrie and a resident of Canada, this great country we live in.  It came about that we wanted to do an art project so we put that bid out into the community as well as across Canada and we're so excited to be able to have this project now actually almost ready to put the art piece up and show it to the community."

Taylor goes on to explain how the 150 Committee, in conjunction with artist James Smith, is asking Airdrie residents to contribute special mementos to be placed in a time capsule.

"We wanted to be able to continue the celebration, not just for the Canada 150 but to look at our 200 year anniversary as Canadians as well.  The time capsule will be placed within the art project and then it'll be opened in 2067 which is our 200th anniversary."

Taylor believes there is a good reason for why this is taking place after Canada's 150th year.  The committee wanted to capture the feeling of what it was like to be a Canadian living in Airdrie during the 150th celebration.

"We wanted to make sure that by collecting the artifacts for the time capsule after the event that we could celebrate what it felt like.  The idea would be we would open the time capsule and get a really good understanding of what it felt like to live in Airdrie, 50 years ago, during the 150."

Although the committee is looking for the unique ideas of Airdrie residents to go into the time capsule, Taylor says they already have some items that will be going into it.

"As an example, we have a flag coming from the Canada 150 and that's coming from our MP Blake Richards.  We also have a Canada 150 Day t-shirt from the Parades Committee.  We have a dance organization that's putting together a video of the dances they did on Canada Day."

Taylor says the time capsule will be placed within the Canada 150 Legacy Art Project and both will be unveiled on Canada Day 2018 at Nose Creek Park.   Contributions from residents will be accepted by mail or in person until May 1st, 2018 at the Nose Creek Valley Museum at 1701 Main Street SW.
