On Wednesday (June 7), Charlotte Blackwell announced her decision to suspend her mayoral campaign for the upcoming fall election. Instead, she will run for City Council.

Blackwell explained her reasoning for the change.

"I had a lot of people ask, why Mayor and not Council first? You have no experience. And I started to think about that. Originally I said, I want to dedicate my all to the city, and the Mayor's position is a full time position. After giving it a lot of thought and talking to some past and current council members, I realized that just because a Council member is a part time position doesn't mean I can't give it my all. I can still give it my all."

Blackwell hopes that if she is elected this fall, she can gain experience in municipal politics as a council member, and she may run for Mayor at a future time.

When asked if a shift in campaign direction means a change to her priorities, Blackwell had this to say.

"Absolutely not. I still have the same beliefs, values and my platform is staying exactly the same."

Blackwell says engaging youth and seniors in Airdrie remains a priority for her campaign.
