AMSQ Director Allan Hunter has suddenly quit citing The Square as the reason.

The city coucillor sent out an email this afternoon indicating that there are several reasons he can no longer participate as a director.

The email was sent to local media sharing his deep concerns.

Below is the email.

Mr. Chairman and Board of Directors:

After more than 5 years as a director of this "For Profit Corporation" I hereby fender (SIC) my resignation effective immediately.

I am individual with more than 25 years of Property Management and Asset managment experience.

During my tenure on AMSQ i have attempted to bring these skills sets forward to ensure the "Owners" of the asset are being served in the best possible manner.

Inspite of my expertise, the structure of the board and the management of the asset have shown me that the expertise and value I have attempted to add are not in keeping with what I consider good and strong Facility and asset management practices.

The most recent events of the proposal for "The Square" have caused a total breakdown of confidence and trust in the community.

My ability to play a dual role as a City  Councillor charged with policy guidance and direction to our citizens and a director of AMSQ charged with the same for the corporation leave me challenged with juxtaposition.

I can not inform the citizens of my concerns as a director of an organization that is in fact owned by the City and by extension the citizens I am elected to serve.

My long held belief is that tax dollars should not be used to compete against tax paying businesses in the private sector.

It appears that a majority of my fellow directors and council colleagues do not agree.

My purpose in resigning is two fold.

1) to encourage the board to hit the reset button and appoint no fewer that 3 citizens with skill sets to understand and provide policy and operational guidance.

2) to engage our citizens and rebuild what I perceive as broken trust and confidence in first, the City Council that I serve on and AMSQ which most citizens never knew nor understood existed or why.

I have every intention of fulfilling my role as City Councilor and would be happy to let my name stand as a director of AMSQ in a new board structure that has adequate citizen representation.

I however see little value in continuing as a director in what I sense has the non confidence of myself and many many citizens.

I will leave it to the will of the Chairman and Board as to accepting my resignation before or after tonight's 4:30 meeting.
