The Airdrie Fire Department's Fire Prevention Investigator has now finalized the investigation into a fire yesterday (April 5) on Tanner Drive in the city and determined the likely cause.

A news release sent out by the Department says the fire appears to have been started by the improper disposal of smoking materials.

The fire, in the 200 block of Tanner Drive in the Thorburn area, consumed a detached, double garage and forced the evacuation of several neighbouring homes.    Preliminary estimates peg the damage at $70,000 and no one was injured in the blaze.

The AFD says their investigation has now concluded.

They are reminding the public that smoking materials should be doused in water or sand prior to their disposal.  Ashtrays should be deep, non-combustible and kept away from items that could catch fire.  They also say smoking materials should never be thrown from windows or automobiles.
