The Airdrie Fire Department's Fire Prevention Investigator says they know what caused the devastating fire in Sharp Hill on Tuesday.

They believe that a cigarette that was improperly disposed of led to the blaze that forced the evacuation of Sharp Hill and left one house completely destroyed.

The Fire Department believes that the origin of the fire was near the intersection of Township Road 294 and Range Road 264, and grew quickly due to the extremely windy conditions that afternoon.

Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel says situations like this happen too often.

"Careless disposal of smoking materials is still a leading cause of residential fires. In this case we can see the consequence was quite dramatic and everything happened so violently and quickly."

Rabel and the rest of the Fire Department continues to remind residents to properly dispose of cigarettes and never to throw them out a window or a vehicle or in a pot containing plants.
