Of course, you've heard of the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Cotton Bowl and the Peach Bowl.  But, have you ever heard of the Turkey Bowl?

The girl's hockey game played last Friday night might not be as famous as those college football games but it soon could be if these two Airdrie hockey teams continue their incredible act of generosity for a few more years,

The Airdrie Atom Girls Lightning and the Midget Girls "AA" Elite Lightning team divided up into two teams to play a fun game to mark their accomplishment of collecting and donating an amazing 236 turkeys to the Airdrie Food Bank.

Both Food Bank Executive Director Lori McRitchie and Mayor Peter Brown were at the game to extend their thanks to the girls, according to Atom Manager Erin Duchnji.

"The game was a lot of fun, half Atom girls and half Midget girls per team.  I think it was exciting for them that the mayor and the food bank were both there to do speeches letting the girls know how well they did."

Duchnji says the turkeys were collected from local families who donated as well as businesses.  Others were obtained when some of the girls from the Atom team went door to door collecting money to buy turkeys.  She says the girls were met with positive comments on their efforts.

"They thought it was great that they were doing something like this," says Duchnji.  She says the number of turkeys donated by the two teams has grown remarkably since the first year in 2016.

"Last year we donated only 50 turkeys, which was huge for us.  This year we really surpassed that by donating 236."

She says the Airdrie Food Bank was very excited to receive the turkey donations this year.  Next year though, they should be ecstatic if the girls reach the goal that's been set.

"Next year, our goal is 500 turkeys."

Duchnji wanted to thank the community for supporting the girls.
