The City of Airdrie's winter snow removal crews are still hard at work.

This winter has brought everything under that cloudy sun including plus twenty temperatures in November, freezing rain in January and heavy snowfalls in March and April.

With temperatures and precipitation fluctuating every week it has been a challenge for the City's road crews to stick to a schedule.

The City is now working on cleaning the final remnants of winter in hopes that they can move on to street cleaning and remove the sand and gravel used throughout the season.

Mike Avramenko from the City's roads department says even in the spring, winter is still being a pest.

"Well the last few days we have been in a few areas where we noticed some piles that will impact our spring clean up, we have been trying to remove those to give us a help. A lot of these areas are heavily shaded and aren't melting the way other parts of the city are."

The City is still in winter operation and has four crews running 24/7.

If you look at January to the end of December, the City's snow removal budget is doing fine. However, Avramenko is more realistic and understands that winter doesn't have a set start and stop date.

"I look at snow and ice season from October 15th to April 15th and if we utilize those months then we would be right in our budget for using our snow and ice budget for this year. "

The City is hoping to begin the next phase, street cleaning, around May 1st.
