The City of Airdrie is using a new method to combat flooding in Nose Creek Park.

A pond leveler has been installed at the creek which looks exactly like a beaver damn, regulating the flow of water.

"We're trying to work with nature on this one as opposed to work against it, so anything we can do to help regulate the flow of the water without having to take other methods is great." said Phil McNeil, Operation Coordinator for Parks, City of Airdrie.

It prevents beavers from blocking the water way, as they cannot prevent the flow of water through the leveler. This is being praised by environmentalists, as it allows beavers and humans to coexist.

"The flow device lets water to flow through the damn, and kind of tricks the beaver, so the beaver doesn't make the damn bigger and bigger." said McNeil.

Similar technology is being used in the City of Calgary as well.
