While Airdrie is getting ready to start their clear bag policy, a nearby community has mostly gotten used to a similar change.

The City of Chestermere first rolled out their clear bag strategy in 2015 as part of an initiative to prevent unwanted waste in Calgary landfills where they send their garbage.

Leigh-Anne Palter, CEO of Chestermere Utilities Inc. says Chestermere residents were hesitant at first, but they've warm up to the concept.

One of the biggest differences between Airdrie's plan and Chestermere's is that bins are provided to hold their garbage bags, in order to ease the worry some residents originally had.

Palter says since clear bags were introduced, Chestermere has seen a diversion rate of 73% of recyclable and organic materials not going to waste.

At the end, Palter says the move to clear bags was to help educate the City on proper management of recyclables and waste. She believes the message is getting through.

Airdrie is expected to start rolling out their clear bag strategy when curbside recycling some in April.
