If you’re into experiencing something a ‘little’ different, now is your chance…literally.

Jackie Skrypnek, a Cochrane local, and her husband, Byran, have built a tiny house in their backyard with the purpose of running a little bed and breakfast.

Skrypnek, who has a Permaculture Design Certificate, said they built the house in a way to make it more ecologically sustainable.

“With a passive solar design, you know, facing south, gathering the heat through the south windows at such an angle that when it’s lower in the winter you’re getting more sun coming in, and less so during the heat of the summer.”

She also added that they put in an earthen floor which is a natural material that absorbs the solar heat to keep the place warm. Eventually, she would like to use food that she grows as ingredients in the breakfasts she makes for her guests.

In order to build this 247 square foot house they had to get the proper permits, but other than that process, the Town of Cochrane was pretty supportive.

“In our case we completely played by the rules. You build it all to code. If you’re wanting to do something a little off grid then you'll probably be a little more challenged.”

The couple is calling it the Hereabouts B&B and plan to list it on Airbnb as well as a Bed and Breakfast through the Town of Cochrane.

Skrypnek said they hope to have everybody from curious locals to foreign visitors as guests in the tiny house.

On December 4, they are hosting an open house between 1P.M. and 3 P.M. for anyone wanting to take a look.
