If the clouds decide to clear up tonight (September 14), there is a slight chance you could see the Northern Lights in the skies.

Bob Rutledge, Head of Operations for the Space Weather Prediction Centre in Colorado, said there is just a small possibility that the natural phenomenon will be visible.

"We do have a recurrent feature on the sun that essentially, some higher speed winds that eminate from the sun sweeps past us and still gives us low levels of storming."

Rutledge said that there was a great showing of the Northern Lights about a week ago because of a big solar storm. The one that's passing through this week is smaller but could still produce the luminescense of the Aurora Borealis.

The Northern Lights occur when particles of the sun collide and descend into the earth's atmosphere creating the light show.

The Space Weater Prediction Centre does have forecasting tools for the Aurora which you can find on their official website.
