The newest Airdrie Community of West Hills received a green light from City Council to move forward to a final review.

The community will be the first new community to be built in the 12,000 acres the city annexed from Rocky View County. The development will be located West of 24th Street, North of Yankee Valley Boulevard and South of First Avenue. The plan area consists of three quarter sections and encompasses 195 hectares (481 acres) of land.

The New community will be comprised of 3,400 different dwellings including single-family homes, townhouses and other multi-family homes. It will provide space for over 9,100 new residents.

Mayor Peter Brown says a project like this will inject some money and jobs into the local economy.

“Really just want to thank them for investing in Airdrie. This economy as everyone knows has not been the best,” Brown explained. “When you have people that are willing to take a risk and come forward in housing and commercial business ventures creating jobs, it’s pretty awesome to see.”

The current ownership group is comprised of Minto Communities, Lamont Land Holdings, Westmark Holdings and Ken and Teresa Reid.

In May 2017, Council approved a joint CASP justification request submitted by proponents of the West Hills CASP and the Davy Creek CASP. A formal application West Hills was submitted in April 2018 by Urban Systems on behalf of the West Hills landownership group.

The project will now be reviewed by the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board before going back to City Council for final approval. It’s expected to take until 2053 for the community to be built out.
