Devon Helfrich, who has been a member of Crossfield Town Council since first being elected in a byelection in 2015, died on January 9th.

Helfrich was just 32 years old.

He was born in Calgary on October 16th, 1988, and lived his entire life in Crossfield.  Helfrich became a councillor in a by-election on June 1st, 2015, and then was re-elected in October 2017.

Helfrich served on several boards and committees in the town including the Youth in Action committee, Collicutt Siding Golf Club, Crossfield Day Camp, the Crossfield Rodeo Board Society, and the Rocky View Handi Bus Society.  He was chosen by council to be Crossfield's Deputy Mayor for the first year of his term in office.  Helfrich also took part in many local events.

His obituary says Helfrich had a passion for politics and his home town.  He wanted to make a difference in the community he loved and enjoyed interacting with people and learning their stories.  Some of his favourite activities were baseball, camping, and hockey and he never missed a San Jose Sharks game, a team he was dedicated to.  Kalamalka Lake was his favourite place to go and spend warm summer days with his lake family.

In yesterday's edition of the Town of Crossfield e-News Mayor Jo Tennant wrote, "Despite many health issues Councillor Helrich continued to be a staunch promoter of all things Crossfield and committed to our community.  On behalf of all of Town Council and staff, I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to Councillor Helrich's immediate and extended families and to all his friends.  A large hole has opened up with his passing - he will be missed."

A Celebration of Life for Devon Helfrich will be announced at a later date.
