Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be Airdrie's Mayor?

If you're a student in grades 5 through 12, you could find out. The deadline for the City's Mayor for a Day contest is coming up quick, and Mayor Peter Brown is encouraging students to apply for what he calls a great experience.

"The day is spent touring around the city, visiting all of our different operations. You have meetings with the Mayor, you get to chair your own Council meeting, and probably the most important thing is to see some of the great ideas that are coming forward for Council to endorse and implement."

Brown said he's often been impressed by the ideas that have come from past Mayor for a Day winners.

"There's been a history of people coming through. We have one happening this summer with one of our young lads who put together a day for celebrating our first responders, and they're working on that as we speak so it's pretty exciting to see some of these ideas get implemented."

Brown said Airdrie is a great community filled with bright young people brimming with great ideas.

"There's a tremendous amount of amazing brainpower going on around our community. When you visit these kids and have an opportunity listen to them, they know a heck of a lot more than I did when I was their age."

The deadline to apply for Mayor for a Day is Friday (February 16). Two applicants, one from junior high and one from senior high, will be selected with top four finalist judging happening on April 23 and the winners announced May 22.
