An organization that serves seniors in the Didsbury area has been nominated for a 2017 Minister's Seniors Service Award.

The Didsbury and District Seniors Support Services is one of 12 organizations to be nominated for the awards this year.  In addition, there are 48 individuals nominated as well as 24 nominees for the inaugural Alice Modin Award.  About 30 years ago, Modin campaigned to launch a seniors’ day in Strathcona County that helped pave the way for a provincewide Seniors’ Week.  The Alice Modin Award was created in her name to honour a senior who has contributed long-term service to their community.

The Didsbury and District Seniors Support Services was nominated for providing a range of programs for seniors in the community since 2000.

Utilizing volunteers, the centre provides services and programs to those who need it, such as rides to medical appointments, filling out income tax and other government forms, housekeeping, companionship and the "Friends n Fun" weekly social program.

The individual and group nominees are being honoured at a series of community celebrations across Alberta during August.  They'll also be recognized at a special ceremony this fall in Calgary.

The Minister's Seniors Service Awards have been presented since 1998 to outstanding Albertans of any age who volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of seniors, and their community.

The organization category that the Didsbury and District Seniors Support Services was nominated in recognizes Alberta not for profit organizations that rely on volunteers to support seniors.
