Airdrie RCMP say they're seeing more cases of vehicles stolen as they're running to keep warm.

"Since the beginning of October, Airdrie RCMP have received 29 complaints of stolen vehicles," said Cpl. Glen Odishaw. "At least 1 in 4 had been left running to warm up with the keys inside."

Odishaw said that even if you leave your vehicle door locked while the car is running, it's still vulnerable as thieves can easily break a window to enter.

But it's not just your vehicle that you risk if leaving the car running unattended.

"There have been vehicles taken that are running with kids actually in the car," said Odishaw. "RCMP would also like to remind people not to leave their vehicles running with their children in the car."

Airdrie has thankfully not had a case of this happening recently but Odishaw said it has occurred in Calgary.

At the end of the day, the biggest piece of advice from the Police is to not leave the car running unattended and to consider purchasing a remote starter if you want to warm up your car.
