On Friday (February 17), the Friends of Cooper's Crossing School Society received a $10,000 donation from Mike Acheson, Agency Owner and Advisor for the Co-operators in Airdrie.

The Friends of Cooper's Crossing School Society is a group formed primarily to raise funds to build a playground for the school. When the school was built, no money was allocated for the construction of a playground, leaving a void that has been filled by parent volunteers. Acheson's donation brings the dream of a playground that much closer to reality, according to Principal Todd Hennig.

"We've got parent leaders who've been working since - a year and a half, almost now - to get grants and fundraising activities to raise the $250,000 goal. We are right now sitting at about $110,000."

Hennig explained that if they can raise half of the $250,000 for the playground, a matching grant expected in March should cover the difference. More fundraisers are planned, and Hennig says the students are excited to have a playground.

"Right now, our kids play on open fields and have some hard top that they get to play on, but they're very much looking forward to having some slides and play structures to play on."

As for Acheson, he said investing in the community is a priority for both him and his company.

"Certainly, in the years we've been inside Airdrie, it's been a foundation of ours to give back, and this is just one more way to be able to assist the community in its time of growth."
